What is WIMAX?
According to WiMAX forum, WiMAX™ is based upon the IEEE 802.16 standard enabling the delivery of wireless broadband services anytime, anywhere. WiMAX products can accommodate fixed and mobile usage models. The IEEE 802.16 standard was developed to deliver non-line-of-sight (LoS) connectivity between a subscriber station and base station with typical cell radius of three to ten kilometers.
What this means for the end user is that WiMAX technology offers the benefit of an always On, Wireless, Mobile and at real broadband speeds. Because it is a standard-based technology it unleashes the benefits of open markets and global economies of scale to deliver the devices and services that consumers want at an affordable cost.
How fast is WIMAX?
Mobitel WiMAX users can expect to have broadband access speeds ranging from 1-17 Mbps though it depends on a number of factors, like distance of the user from the base station or node, whether there is line of site or Non-LoS to the base station, and the number of users on the network.
The 17 Mbps refers to a single frequency channel/sector at ideal condition and is shared among multiple users link to the channel. Therefore, users will get the subscribed speeds than with other technologies like GSM HSPA & CDMA EVDO. 3

WiMAX is a Wide Area Network (WAN) technology.
Service providers will deploy a network of towers that will enable access over many miles. Internet access and Multimedia services like VoIP, Music and Video are instantly available anytime, anywhere within the coverage areas.
